SeaSalt Antiques and Vintage Market

I'm finally getting the chance to post a few photos from the weekend. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately!) there aren't too many shots because I was so busy selling treasures from the Yarmouth County Museum's stall!

Meet Alice Pedersen

Alice at The Wooden Buoy

When you visit the Wooden Buoy on Water Street in Yarmouth, let your eyes lead you to the happiest and most colourful corner of the shop and you'll be amongst sisters Alice and Annie Pedersen's treasures.

"Our style of vintage is bright and colourful. We love red, we love blue, we love turquoise, all the colours of the '50s," says Alice.

Alice at The Wooden Buoy

The Pedersen sisters grew up in a Danish family and their love of the mid-century modern style was fostered from an early age.

"Mid-century stuff was always in our home. We grew up looking at it and loving it and it just carried on," she says.

Alice says she was just gathering kitschy items for her own collection until last May when the Wooden Buoy opened. Now she and her sister are in the business of selling their cute treasures.

Their collection includes colourful kitchen items, anything bearing the image of a cute animal, and even old radios and TVs.

"Anything just as long as it's mid-century," Alice says.

She's looking forward to being a vendor at the SeaSalt Antiques and Vintage Market on June 13. She says she likes meeting new people and being a part of the community.

"I'm excited to let people know that we're here and that we love our shop and I'm sure they'd love it too if they came in and had a look."

Waterfront Antiques & Collectibles

When you walk up the stairs to the second floor of the Killam Brothers building on Water Street, get ready for a feast for your senses.

Waterfront Antiques & Collectibles

Susan Bain at Waterfront Antiques and Collectibles has nearly anything you could possibly desire in the two-storey shop she shares with other vendors. There are dishes galore, musical instruments, beautiful antique furniture, taxidermy and even an impressive collection of Star Wars action figures.

"This is just a hobby," says Bain. "The shop's been open six years, but before that I was just a collector."

And Bain has been a collector for many years.

"I always loved antiques, since I was 10," she says. "I loved to wash my mother’s salt and pepper shakers and cups and saucers every spring and fall. And I loved rearranging them on the shelves. That’s how I knew I was born with it, I guess.”

Bain is counting down the days until the Tusket Vintage and Antiques Fair. She says the entire antiques community is buzzing with anticipation.

"I don’t know what it is – it’s like a disease! It creates a lot of excitement in the antique dealers. Most people get excited to do a show.”

“It’s just fun for me," she says. "It’s a lot of work because you have to pack everything, take it there, pray for sunny days and then pack up what you don’t sell to bring it back.”

“But we wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t fun!”

Warehouse Antiques and Collectibles

Although Warehouse Antiques and Collectibles (located on Water St., under the Glebe St. Frenchy's) just opened its doors this year, Howard Benham is an old hand when it comes to picking antiques.

"Oh my gosh, I've been doing this off and on for 35 years or so," he says.

He goes by the moniker Antique Picker and also sells his wares from his barn at 301 Dayton Rd.

Benham says his love of antiques started when he was just a boy.

"I've just always liked old stuff," he says. "We'd go to Grammie's to visit and, you know, my brothers would be out playing and I'd be in the house looking at all the neat, old stuff. It's just always been something I've liked."

Warehouse Antiques & Collectibles

Warehouse Antiques and Collectibles is a group effort with several vendors sharing one large space. He and fellow collector, Alice Pedersen, came up with the idea of opening a shop.

"I needed a partner, so we partnered up," he says. "We'll give it a whirl and see what happens. I hope it works out for us."

Benham has been instrumental in helping to organize the second annual Tusket Vintage and Antiques Fair. He says he's excited to take part again this year.

"I'm glad Natalie [Smith] started this," "We love it and look forward to doing it again this year."

Yaciuk's Antiques, Clocks & Collectibles

If you drive down the Lake George Road, you'll come upon a neat, little barn on the side of the road with bright red doors. If you're lucky, a flag emblazoned with the letters O-P-E-N will be flapping in the wind.

David Yaciuk opened his antiques shop in Annapolis Royal almost 10 years ago, but has called Brenton home for the past five years.

He says he's been crazy about antiques since he was three years old, but it all started out pretty traumatically.

"My obsession in life was washing machines until my sister put me in one and it traumatized me," he says.

"The only thing that calmed me down was my Mom sent me to the neighbours' and my neighbour gave me her cuckoo clock because I was fascinated with it. And I’ve been collecting clocks since, almost as a comfort thing."

Yaciuk not only collects and sells cuckoo clocks, but he also has a workshop in the barn where he repairs and restores clocks.

He also collects music boxes and different kinds of animated and wind-up toys, but cuckoo clocks are special because they combine all of his favourite things.

"The cuckoo clock is everything compressed into one," he says. "You've got your music box, you've got your animated figures, you've got the mechanics all in one little, bunched up box."

Yaciuk's shop also boasts an impressive collection of Hummel figurines.

Yaciuk says he looks forward to selling his wares at this year's Tusket Vintage and Antiques Fair.

"I'm excited. It'll be great, for sure," he says. "I enjoyed last year too. It was absolutely wonderful. A lot of fun."
