Meet Susan Bain

Susan Bain has been collecting antiques for many years.

"I always loved antiques, since I was 10," she says. "I loved to wash my mother’s salt and pepper shakers and cups and saucers every spring and fall. And I loved rearranging them on the shelves. That’s how I knew I was born with it, I guess.”

Bain will be one of the vendors at the SeaSalt Antiques and Vintage Market Saturday, June 10 in the Anthony Pavilion behind the Mariners Centre and she's looking forward to it.

“It’s just fun for me," she says. "It’s a lot of work because you have to pack everything, take it there, pray for sunny days and then pack up what you don’t sell to bring it back.”

“But we wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t fun!”

Warehouse Antiques and Collectibles

Although Warehouse Antiques and Collectibles (located on Water St., under the Glebe St. Frenchy's) just opened its doors this year, Howard Benham is an old hand when it comes to picking antiques.

"Oh my gosh, I've been doing this off and on for 35 years or so," he says.

He goes by the moniker Antique Picker and also sells his wares from his barn at 301 Dayton Rd.

Benham says his love of antiques started when he was just a boy.

"I've just always liked old stuff," he says. "We'd go to Grammie's to visit and, you know, my brothers would be out playing and I'd be in the house looking at all the neat, old stuff. It's just always been something I've liked."

Warehouse Antiques & Collectibles

Warehouse Antiques and Collectibles is a group effort with several vendors sharing one large space. He and fellow collector, Alice Pedersen, came up with the idea of opening a shop.

"I needed a partner, so we partnered up," he says. "We'll give it a whirl and see what happens. I hope it works out for us."

Benham has been instrumental in helping to organize the second annual Tusket Vintage and Antiques Fair. He says he's excited to take part again this year.

"I'm glad Natalie [Smith] started this," "We love it and look forward to doing it again this year."

Yaciuk's Antiques, Clocks & Collectibles

If you drive down the Lake George Road, you'll come upon a neat, little barn on the side of the road with bright red doors. If you're lucky, a flag emblazoned with the letters O-P-E-N will be flapping in the wind.

David Yaciuk opened his antiques shop in Annapolis Royal more than 10 years ago, but now calls Brenton home.

He says he's been crazy about antiques since he was three years old, but it all started out pretty traumatically.

"My obsession in life was washing machines until my sister put me in one and it traumatized me," he says.

"The only thing that calmed me down was my Mom sent me to the neighbours' and my neighbour gave me her cuckoo clock because I was fascinated with it. And I’ve been collecting clocks since, almost as a comfort thing."

Yaciuk not only collects and sells cuckoo clocks, but he also has a workshop in the barn where he repairs and restores clocks.

He also collects music boxes and different kinds of animated and wind-up toys, but cuckoo clocks are special because they combine all of his favourite things.

"The cuckoo clock is everything compressed into one," he says. "You've got your music box, you've got your animated figures, you've got the mechanics all in one little, bunched up box."

Yaciuk's shop also boasts an impressive collection of Hummel figurines.

Yaciuk says he looks forward to selling his wares at this year's SeaSalt Antiques and Vintage Market Saturday, June 10 in the Anthony Pavilion behind the Mariners Centre.

"I'm excited. It'll be great, for sure," he says.

Grandma's Collectibles

Welcome to the Tusket Vintage and Antique Fair's blog! On a recent trip to see some of our exhibitors, Natalie, Marie and Ingrid dropped in to see Olive Thibault at Grandma's Collectibles in Ashmore, Digby County.

We found so many treasures during our quick stop at the barn, like dozens of strings of beaded jewelry, beautifully displayed in every colour of the rainbow.

And the 10-year-old girl in me fell in love with this Barbie thermos. Look at her poise! She's just so perfectly vintage.

I love Pyrex. That rooster! Those hot air balloons! I still can't believe I left this gem in the barn.

And so many Ball jars. In every size and shape.

I'll be posting some more photos and profiles of some of the vendors who will be selling their wares at the Tusket Vintage and Antiques Fair in the coming weeks. In the meantime, check out our poster and mark your calendars! June 14 and 15, under the tent next to the Argyle Township Court House and Archives and across from Carl's Store
